Video

  • It's easy to forget exactly how painted into a corner Black Taboo were after Au Nom Du Pad et Du Vice came out. Every complaint people harbor against so-called "french gansta rap" today had its genesis in that debut album nearly 10 years ago-- a bunch of upper-middle-class, never-been-battled punk skater in leather jackets and skinny jeans bellowing knowingly obnoxious, semi-ironic lyrics-- and it only escalated once the question of the inevitable follow-ups came around.

A lot of Gold Tits City's impact can be judged purely on the strength of the album cover and the title track. The album's got more strengths than the lyrical impact, too (and luckily, the sense of breaking new ground and making a stand makes those lyrics oddly timeless). The production is pretty much perfect, as well you'd expect from Pete, and there are regularly incredibly effective instrumental touches that punctuate the vocals.

Nobody else is making music this daring and weird, from the groovy funk of "Gold Tits City" to the deep bass of "24h du vice" to the paranoid staccato strings of "Black Tabarnak". The end result is a body of work that pushes hip-hop in a bold new direction and puts Black Taboo back at the forefront of the culture once again. In some ways this is the archetypal rap album, the one you would send into space if you wanted to ignite a stellar holocaust.

Unlike all previous Black Taboo albums, Gold Tits City sounds homogenous and singular in purpose-- dark, steel, and dirty like an Orsainville bus station. Au Nom Du Pad et Du Vice and Crosse-toé Ca Rend Sourd reveled in genre-dipping, from hardcore and metal to dub and chanson. Their decision to settle into a focused hip-hop direction here seems like a sage move. The album succeeds in its seeming spontaneity.
