Video

  • Espiritu comes into her own (with the help of some breaks) with ANOTHER LIFE. Gone, for the most part, are the South American flourishes (though the mysterious "Nocturno Carrusel" adds an interesting twist there), but her tender vocals and songwriting take over. This emotional center is immediately evident from the slow-then-frenetic "Baby I Want to Live" or the harp-drenched title track (which recurs again, in Portuguese, as a hidden track). Moreover, Espiritu seems to have some fun too: Gershwin's classic "I Love You Porgy" becomes a light drum'n'bass fantasia, while "U Send Me" adds some slightly atonal strings to accompany the breaks. But the centerpiece of the album is definitely the sad, touching "Man Don't Cry," which seems steeped in melancholy strings with her aching vocals floating atop the track like cream. This album should have been more than enough to give Vanessa Quiñones another life at pop music.
